Innovative solutions for indoor-outdoor space
At $5.5 billion and 3.1 million sq. ft, Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium is the largest and most expensive NFL stadium to ever be constructed. As you approach it you'll notice the field is not actually enclosed but that the roof is a canopy raised above and constructed of translucent glass to let natural light in.
This unique indoor-outdoor venue required custom solutions and a variety of Wabo® expansion joints were selected from Watson Bowman Acme's Parking Structures and Stadium/ Arenas product lines.
To address the threat of earthquakes, WBA's high performance wall expansion joint system capable of accomodating large multi-directional seismic forces was specified. The standard Wabo®QuakeWall (QWE) system is designed to be up to 36” wide. However, due to the nature of the stadium's moat system, the engineers requested that WBA create a QWE to span up to a 89” wide joint opening.
Custom joints designed to save lives
From early on in the design phase WBA worked with the specialty contractor West Coast Expansion Joints, Turner/ AECOM and Gensler to design the custom QWE system to meet the project specifications.
The Wabo®QuakeWall (QWE) system designed for the moat is WBA's widest expansion joint ever designed for a stadium. The custom state-of-the-art expansion joint system will save lives and protect property in the event of an earthquake. This is a huge success for the WBA design team, installers, owners and any attendees of the facility.
After a year without fans due to the pandemic, the stadium will now be opening its doors. It will host home games for both Los Angeles' NFL teams- the Rams and the Chargers as well as a number of high profile events like the 2021-22 Superbowl and the 2028 Summer Olympics.
